The erratic behavior of the stretch hose on the Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet 2252 is caused by a failure in the friction-glide system and the internal tension spring. Specifically, the hose is designed to slide through a plastic guide sleeve; over time, pet hair, fine dust, and sticky residue from floor cleaners accumulate on the exterior of the hose and inside the guide channel. This creates "stiction," where the hose resists initial movement, requiring a hard pull to break the seal. Once the hose overcomes this friction, the internal recoil spring—which has been under extreme tension due to the blockage—releases all its stored energy at once. This results in the "violent" retraction you are experiencing. You can confirm this by examining the hose for a grayish, gritty film or by noticing that the hose "stutters" rather than sliding smoothly as you pull it toward full extension.
How to Fix It
To restore the smooth operation of the stretch hose, you must remove the physical obstructions and lubricate the glide path. Follow these exact steps:
- Disconnect the vacuum from the power outlet to ensure safety.
- Remove the dirt canister entirely to provide unobstructed access to the hose entry point and the internal housing.
- Extend the stretch hose to its maximum length. Do not force it if it hits a hard stop, but apply steady pressure until it is fully deployed.
- Using a microfiber cloth dampened with a mixture of warm water and a drop of dish soap, thoroughly scrub the entire length of the external hose. Pay special attention to the ribbed sections where debris tends to collect.
- Dry the hose completely with a clean towel. Any remaining moisture will attract more dust and make the problem return faster.
- Insert a narrow crevice tool or a thin pipe cleaner into the housing gap where the hose enters the machine. Gently clear out any clumps of pet hair or "dust bunnies" lodged in the guide sleeve.
- Apply a very small amount of dry silicone spray (do not use WD-40 or oil-based lubricants, as these degrade the plastic and attract dirt) to a cloth and wipe it along the length of the hose that slides into the housing.
- Slowly extend and retract the hose five to ten times to distribute the lubricant and settle the recoil spring.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Internal Spring Tension: If the hose still snaps back violently, the internal spring may have jumped its track or become kinked. - Verify Swivel Joint Alignment: Ensure the swivel head is locking correctly. If the swivel is misaligned, it can put lateral pressure on the hose housing, pinching the hose and increasing the friction during extension.

- Avoid using petroleum-based lubricants on the hose; these will chemically react with the plastic and cause the hose to become gummy or brittle over time.
- Never pull the hose beyond its maximum extension point, as this can permanently stretch the recoil spring, leading to a hose that will no longer retract at all.
- Perform a "hose wipe-down" once every three months if you have high-shedding pets to prevent the buildup of static-charged hair in the guide sleeve.
- Always ensure the dirt tank is seated perfectly; a skewed tank can put pressure on the hose entry point, causing the hose to bind.
