This specific error pattern—a rhythmic beeping accompanied by a red light ring sweeping toward the rear of the chassis—indicates a "Bin Full" or "Emptying Failure" state. The i3+ EVO uses an infrared sensor array located at the rear of the internal dust bin to detect debris levels. When the light sweeps backward, the robot is signaling that it has attempted to dock with the Clean Base, but the vacuum cycle failed to clear the bin or the sensors still detect a blockage. This typically happens for one of three reasons: a physical clog in the "throat" of the robot (the passage between the bin and the base), a saturated filter that is preventing airflow, or a buildup of fine dust on the infrared sensors. If the bin is physically empty but the light persists, the sensor is likely "blinded" by a film of dust, tricking the robot into thinking the bin is still overflowing. You can confirm this by checking if the Clean Base motor engages (a loud humming sound) during the docking process; if the motor runs but the bin remains full, you have a mechanical blockage.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to clear the error and restore the self-emptying function:
- Manual Bin Purge: Press the release button on the top of the robot and slide the bin out. Open the bin door and dump the contents. Do not just shake it; use your finger to clear any clumps of hair or cardboard stuck in the corners.
- Filter Deep Clean: Remove the green pleated filter from the top of the bin. Tap it firmly against the side of a trash can. If the filter looks grey or clogged, replace it. A clogged filter creates backpressure that prevents the Clean Base from sucking debris out of the robot.
- Sensor Sanitization: Locate the two small infrared sensor windows on the rear interior of the bin assembly. Use a dry cotton swab or a microfiber cloth dampened with a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the sensors clean to remove the film of dust that causes the "false full" reading.
- The "Throat" Clearance: Look into the opening on the underside of the robot where the bin connects to the vacuum motor. Use a flashlight to check for trapped debris (like a coin or a clump of pet hair) that may be blocking the exit path. Use a pair of tweezers to pull out any obstructions.
- Clean Base Verification: Ensure the Clean Base is on a hard floor. Check the disposable bag inside the base. If the bag is full or shifted, it can block the airflow. Remove the bag and ensure the cardboard flap is seated correctly.
- Hard Reset: Once cleaned, slide the bin back in until it clicks firmly. Press and hold the CLEAN button for 10 seconds to clear the error state from the onboard memory.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Clean Base Bag: Even if the bag doesn't look full, a small tear in the bag can cause a loss of suction, meaning the robot doesn't empty fully, triggering the red sweep. Replace the bag with a genuine iRobot replacement part to ensure the airtight seal is maintained.
- Inspect the Charging Contacts: If the robot isn't making a perfect seal with the base, the emptying sequence won't trigger correctly. Wipe the two gold charging contacts on the bottom of the robot and the two pins on the Clean Base with a dry cloth to ensure a solid electrical connection.
- Check for "Bin Door" Misalignment: Inspect the plastic hinge and latch of the dust bin. If the door is slightly warped or not closing flush, the vacuum seal is broken, and the Clean Base cannot create enough suction to pull debris out of the bin.
- Perform a Factory Reset: If the red sweep persists despite a clean bin, the software may be hung. Press and hold the CLEAN button for 20 seconds until the light ring spins, then restart the device to recalibrate the sensors.

- Filter Schedule: Replace the green filters every 2 months. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of "Bin Full" errors on the i3+ EVO.
- Avoid Wet Debris: Never vacuum wet spills. Damp dust clumps into a "plug" in the robot's throat that cannot be removed by the Clean Base and requires manual disassembly.
- Bag Maintenance: Change the Clean Base bag as soon as you notice a drop in suction, regardless of how much space is left in the bag; fine dust can clog the pores of the bag material.
