the doors on my whirlpool french door fridge don't seem aligned, one sits further out than the other.

— asked by Taylor

Quick answer: The refrigerator is not level front-to-back, or the door hinge adjustments are out of specification. French doors are sensitive to both cabinet leveling and individual door alignment.

Diagnosis

The refrigerator is not level front-to-back, or the door hinge adjustments are out of specification. French doors are sensitive to both cabinet leveling and individual door alignment.

How to Fix It

1. Check and adjust leveling first. Use a 4-foot level on the top of the cabinet, front to back.
2. The front should be 1/4 inch higher than the rear. Adjust the front leveling legs by turning them clockwise to raise, counter-clockwise to lower.
3. For door alignment, open the door that sits proud (further out).
4. At the top hinge, locate the adjustment hex bolt behind the hinge cover.
5. Loosen the bolt slightly. Gently lift or lower the door to match the adjacent door, then re-tighten the bolt.
6. Check the magnetic seal closes evenly along the entire height.

If That Didn't Work

If the doors still do not meet evenly in the middle, the center mullion bracket that the doors latch to may be out of position. This bracket can be adjusted laterally by loosening its mounting screws and shifting it left or right.

Heads Up

Always make small, incremental adjustments. Over-adjusting the leveling legs can cause the doors to swing open or shut on their own.
