the lower broiler element in my oven cracked and sparked. can i just replace it?

— asked by Jamie

Quick answer: The broil element has failed. Arcing caused the spark and crack.

Diagnosis

The broil element has failed. Arcing caused the spark and crack. This is a direct replacement.

How to Fix It

Unplug range. Element is held by two screws at the back of the oven cavity. Remove screws. Gently pull element forward. Disconnect wires from terminals. Attach wires to new element. Part is usually W10307441. Push element back, secure screws.

If That Didn't Work

If new element fails quickly, check the socket terminals on the oven back wall. Burnt or loose terminals cause arcing and kill new elements.

Heads Up

Element terminals are live when plugged in. Always unplug first. Ensure wires are fully seated on the new element's terminals. A loose connection will repeat the problem.
