i get a 'ringing failed' message in the app when someone presses the button, and my inside chime doesn't ring

Quick answer: The electronic signal from the doorbell isn't reaching your internal mechanical chime to trigger it. This is a wiring or power kit configuration error.

Diagnosis

The electronic signal from the doorbell isn't reaching your internal mechanical chime to trigger it. This is a wiring or power kit configuration error.

How to Fix It

Verify the power kit installation at your internal chime.

  1. Turn off power at the breaker.
  2. Open your internal chime box. Locate the small, white Ring power kit module.
  3. Ensure its two wires are firmly connected to the 'Front' and 'Trans' (or 'Transformer') terminals on the chime. The wire from your doorbell should be on 'Front'.
  4. Ensure the chime's toggle switch (on the power kit) is set to the correct position for your chime (usually the middle setting for a standard mechanical chime).

If That Didn't Work

The 'Ringing Failed' alert can also appear if your in-app Chime Tones are misconfigured. In the Ring app, go to Device Settings > Chime Tones > select a tone and test it. Sometimes reselecting a tone re-establishes the link.

Heads Up

If you have a digital chime, you must remove the white power kit entirely and use the provided bypass cable. Having the power kit installed on a digital chime will prevent it from ringing.
