Diagnosis
The Ring Pro 2 runs warm during normal operation due to its processor and always-on radar chip. However, 'extremely hot' (uncomfortable to hold) is not normal and indicates a problem.
How to Fix It
Overheating is almost always caused by excessive voltage.
- Check the power source. The Pro 2 requires 16-24VAC. Using a higher voltage (like 30V) will cause it to overheat and can permanently damage the unit.
- Measure the voltage at the doorbell wires with a multimeter. If it's consistently above 24VAC, you need a different transformer.
- Ensure the doorbell is not in direct, blistering afternoon sun for prolonged periods. Consider a sun shield accessory if it is.
If That Didn't Work
If the voltage is correct and it's still excessively hot, the internal voltage regulator may be faulty. This is a defect. Contact Ring Support for a replacement, as this can lead to premature failure.
Heads Up
Some warmth is expected, especially in summer. But if the faceplate is too hot to keep your finger on, that's a critical issue. Don't ignore it, as chronic overheating will kill the battery inside that maintains settings during brief power losses.
