Diagnosis
A foreign object is caught between the inner wash drum and the outer tub. Common items are coins, bra wires, or small toys.
How to Fix It
Unplug the washer. Tilt it back carefully and look underneath through the drain pump filter opening. Shine a light. You may see the object. Use needle-nose pliers to remove it. Also, remove the drain pump filter and check the impeller for damage.
If That Didn't Work
The noise could be from a failed spider arm bearing. The spider arm connects the inner drum to the drive shaft. If it corrodes and seizes, it creates a metal-on-metal grind. This is a major repair requiring drum disassembly.
Heads Up
Do not ignore a grinding noise. A foreign object can eventually puncture the inner drum. A failed bearing will destroy the washer if run. Diagnose it fully before running another cycle.
