washer is making a loud grinding noise during the spin cycle, sounds terrible.

— asked by Sam

DIAGNOSIS A loud grinding or metal-on-metal noise during high-speed spin points to a failure in the drive system. The most common culprit for this model is the spider arm, a component that connects the inner basket to the drive shaft, which can corrode and break.

FIX This is not a user-serviceable repair. You must stop using the machine immediately. Continuing to run it will cause catastrophic damage. The repair requires complete disassembly of the tub to replace the spider arm and often the entire outer tub assembly. Contact a qualified GE technician.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK A less common but possible cause is a foreign object like a coin or bra wire lodged between the inner wash basket and the outer tub. You can inspect by shining a flashlight around the gap at the top of the basket while manually spinning it.

HEADS UP The spider arm is made of aluminum and is prone to corrosion from detergent and bleach buildup. Using less detergent and running monthly Affresh cleaning cycles can prolong its life.
