Diagnosis
Grease splatter carbonizes onto the heating elements and the removable metal smoke shield. This is expected, but requires the right cleaning method to avoid damage.
How to Fix It
- Let the unit cool completely. Remove the Smart Cook System lid by pressing the release buttons.
- Remove the two Phillips-head screws to take off the stainless steel smoke shield. Soak the shield in hot, soapy water.
- For the heating elements and the interior of the lid: Wipe with a damp, soft cloth or sponge. For stuck-on grease, use a degreaser spray (like for grills) on the cloth first, not directly on the electronics. Never immerse the lid unit in water.
If That Didn't Work
For heavy, baked-on carbon on the smoke shield, use a paste of baking soda and water, let it sit for 15 minutes, then gently scrub with a non-abrasive sponge. Rinse and dry thoroughly before reassembling.
Heads Up
Never use metal scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, or oven cleaner on any part, especially the non-stick cooking pot or the heating elements, as it will cause permanent damage.
