The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is equipped with a thermal cut-out switch designed to protect the motor from permanent failure. When the motor exceeds a specific temperature threshold, the internal circuit breaker trips, instantly cutting all power to the machine. This is not a mechanical failure, but a safety response to restricted airflow. Because the motor relies on the air it sucks up to keep itself cool, any significant drop in airflow causes the motor to overheat rapidly.
This typically happens due to one of three triggers: a physical blockage in the hose or intake, heavily clogged filters that prevent air from exiting the motor housing, or a brush bar that is jammed with tangled hair and string, forcing the motor to work harder and run hotter. You can confirm this is a thermal trip if the machine was working perfectly and then suddenly died without a flicker, and if it refuses to turn on even after being plugged into a different outlet.
How to Fix It
To reset the machine and prevent it from happening again, follow these precise steps:
- Immediate Power Down: Unplug the vacuum from the wall outlet immediately. Do not keep trying to flip the power switch, as this can prevent the thermal fuse from resetting.
- Cooling Period: Leave the machine unplugged for a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes. The thermal switch is temperature-dependent; it will not engage until the motor core has cooled to room temperature.
- Clear the Brush Bar: Flip the machine over and press the side release tabs to remove the cleaner head. Use a coin or screwdriver to unlock the end cap of the brush bar. Slide the bar out and use scissors to cut away any hair or carpet fibers wrapped around the bristles. Ensure the brush rotates freely by hand.
- Clear the Airway: Remove the hose from the intake port. Drop a coin or a small ball through the hose to see if it falls through to the bin. If it sticks, use a broom handle or a flexible plumbing snake to push the blockage through. Check the "U-bend" area where the hose meets the bin, as this is a common spot for clumps of pet hair to lodge.
- Deep Clean Filters: Remove the pre-filter (the foam piece) and the post-motor filter. Wash them under a cold tap until the water runs clear. Crucial: Let the filters air dry for at least 24 hours. Installing a damp filter will restrict airflow and trigger the thermal cut-out again within minutes.
- Empty the Bin: Press the red release button to empty the bin completely, ensuring no debris is stuck in the cyclone assembly.
If That Didn't Work
- Test the Power Source: Plug a lamp or small appliance into the exact outlet you were using. If the lamp doesn't light, you have tripped your home's GFCI outlet or circuit breaker, not the vacuum's internal fuse. Reset your home electrical panel.
- Inspect the Power Cord: Check the entire length of the power cable for any kinks, frays, or internal breaks, especially where the cord enters the vacuum body. If the internal wiring is damaged, the machine may lose continuity and shut off.
- Check for "Hidden" Blockages: Remove the hose entirely and look inside the intake port on the main body of the vacuum. Use a flashlight to check for a blockage right at the entry point of the motor housing that might be missed by a broom handle.
- Verify Brush Bar Belt: If the brush bar doesn't spin when you turn the machine back on, the belt may have snapped. A seized belt can cause the motor to overheat almost instantly upon startup.

- Avoid "Max" Filling: Never let the bin fill past the MAX line. Overfilling restricts the airflow through the cyclones, increasing the load on the motor.
- Dry Time Warning: Never use a hairdryer or heater to speed up the drying of filters; high heat can warp the foam and ruin the seal, leading to loss of suction.
- Surface Awareness: If you are vacuuming high-pile shag rugs, the brush bar may struggle to rotate, causing the motor to heat up faster. Use the "hard floor" setting or a manual attachment for extremely thick carpets.
