Diagnosis
This loud grinding noise on the Eufy RoboVac G30 Edge is typically caused by a mechanical obstruction in the drivetrain or the brush assembly. Specifically, the G30 Edge uses a high-torque motor for its main rolling brush; when a hard object like a small pebble, a plastic toy fragment, or a coin enters the brush roll chamber, it can become wedged between the brush axle and the motor housing. This creates a high-frequency vibration and a grinding sound that resonates through the plastic chassis. Alternatively, the noise may originate from the side-spinning brush (the "edge" brush). Because this brush is held in place by a plastic gear assembly, a tightly wound piece of nylon thread or a hairball can jam the gear, causing the motor to strain and "chatter." You can confirm the source by lifting the vacuum manually while it is running; if the noise stops when the brush is lifted off the floor, the issue is the main brush. If it continues regardless of floor contact, the issue is likely a drive wheel motor or a side brush gear failure.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to clear the mechanical obstruction and restore silent operation:
- Power down the G30 Edge completely using the physical power switch on the side of the unit to prevent accidental activation.
- Flip the vacuum over and locate the main brush guard. Press the release tabs and lift the brush roll assembly out of the chassis.
- Inspect the brush roll itself. Remove any tangled hair or string from the end caps. If the end caps are slipping on the axle, the brush will wobble and cause a rhythmic grinding sound; ensure they are snapped firmly into place.
- Use a flashlight to inspect the internal brush chamber. Look specifically at the gear teeth on the left and right sides of the motor drive. Use a pair of needle-nose tweezers to remove any small debris, pebbles, or plastic shards lodged in the gear teeth.
- Remove the side brush by unscrewing the single Phillips-head screw holding it in place. Pull the brush out and check the spindle for wound-up hair. Clean the spindle thoroughly and re-install the brush, ensuring the screw is snug but not overtightened.
- Clear the dustbin and the intake port. A large piece of debris stuck in the suction throat can sometimes vibrate against the internal housing, mimicking a motor grind.
If That Didn't Work
- Drive Wheel Obstruction: Check the two main drive wheels. Press down on each wheel to see if they have a "springy" feel. If one feels stiff, a small stone may be wedged in the tire tread or the axle. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the gap between the wheel and the chassis.
- Worn Gearbox: If the grinding persists and sounds like metal-on-metal, the internal plastic gears of the drive motor may have stripped a tooth. This requires a full replacement of the drive motor assembly (Part #G30-DRV-MOT).
- Bearing Failure: If the noise is a high-pitched whine accompanied by grinding, the main brush motor bearings may have failed due to moisture or fine dust infiltration. This is a non-serviceable part and requires replacing the entire brush motor module.
- Factory Reset: In rare cases, a calibration error can cause the motors to pulse rapidly, creating a noise that sounds like grinding. Perform a hard reset by holding the power and home buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds to reset the motor controllers.
Heads Up
- Never use water or liquid cleaners inside the brush chamber or on the gear assemblies, as this will strip the factory lubricant and lead to permanent motor seizure.
- Check your side brushes every two weeks; the G30 Edge is prone to winding hair around the spindle, which puts undue stress on the motor and leads to premature failure.
- Avoid vacuuming areas with loose gravel or small plastic beads, as these are the primary cause of "gear jam" errors and grinding noises in the G30 series.
- Ensure the main brush is seated perfectly flat in its tracks; if it is tilted slightly, it will rub against the plastic housing, creating a loud scratching sound.
