my dyson v8 is making a weird pulsing sound and has no suction. help?

Yeah, this one's common. That pulsing is the automatic cut-out because something's blocked. The machine won't function until you clear it.

First, disconnect it from the charger and let it cool down. Don't touch the trigger. Now, check these spots in order:

  1. The bin. Is it packed full past the top mark? Empty it.
  2. The main path. Open the bin by pulling the release catch. Check inside the cyclones and where the wand or tool attaches.
  3. The wand. Remove it from the machine and the cleaner head. Look for blockages at both ends.
  4. The cleaner head. Turn it over. Clear any obstructions on the brush bar and the air inlet.

If that didn't work: The filters might be clogged and wet. You have two. The Pre-filter lifts out of the cyclone top. The Post-filter twists off anti-clockwise from the back. Both need to be washed under cold water until it runs clear, then dried for a full 24 hours. They must be bone dry before you put them back.

Heads up: If you see a solid orange light on the machine, that's a motor fault. A flashing orange light means an incompatible tool is attached. A flashing white light means the cyclone isn't fitted correctly.
