Diagnosis
A loud grinding noise from the wash tub. The most common cause is a foreign object caught in the wash arm or pump assembly.
How to Fix It
Inspect the lower spray arm and pump area. Remove the lower rack. Manually rotate the lower spray arm to check for obstruction. Remove the filter assembly (twist and lift the coarse filter, then lift out the fine filter). Check the sump area below for debris like glass, bone, or utensil fragments. Clear any debris.
If That Didn't Work
The noise may be from the drain pump impeller. A broken impeller blade or worn pump motor bearing causes grinding. This requires accessing and inspecting the drain pump, located behind the front access panel at the bottom of the unit.
Heads Up
Run a diagnostic test. Press and hold the Soil Level and Power buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The unit will enter self-test mode. Listen during the drain pump test (code d1) and wash pump test (code w1) to isolate the faulty component.
