the camera on the front for obstacle avoidance seems useless, it just runs over my dog's toys and socks

— asked by Taylor

Quick answer: The ReactiveAI obstacle avoidance is either turned off, the camera lens is dirty, or it's operating in low-light conditions where its vision is impaired.

Diagnosis

The ReactiveAI obstacle avoidance is either turned off, the camera lens is dirty, or it's operating in low-light conditions where its vision is impaired.

How to Fix It

  • In the Roborock app, go to 'Detection Settings' and ensure 'ReactiveAI Obstacle Avoidance' is toggled ON. Also, verify 'Less Collision Mode' is OFF for maximum avoidance.
  • Wipe the front camera lens (the small circular glass above the bumper) with a dry microfiber cloth. Smudges cripple its vision.
  • Run cleaning cycles in well-lit rooms. The camera needs ambient light to identify objects.

If That Didn't Work

The system is designed to avoid *solid* objects like shoes and cables. It intentionally goes over low-lying, soft objects like socks and clothing to 'eat' them, as it assumes they are debris. This is by design, not a fault.

Heads Up

The system cannot detect clear objects, very dark objects on dark floors, or objects lower than 4cm. Always do a quick floor pick-up for the best results.
